Cheatgrass, or downy brome, is a winter annual that was first discovered around Denver, CO.
Growth Habit: Annual species, growing between 4 and 30 inches tall. Reproduces by seed.
Leaves: Leaf sheathes are densely covered in soft hair with short, papery ligules.
Stem: Covered in soft, dense hair
Roots: Shallow and thin.
Seeds/Inflorescence: Slender, 1-2 inches long and generally drooping to one side. Awns become reddish/purple at maturity
Other: Highly invasive and thrives in disturbed ground. Favors fire burnt areas and is generally one of the first species to appear after a fire. Due to its early germination/maturity, it becomes a fire hazard as the plant dries up in the summer months.
